Just Laugh

Just Laugh
2/26/2015

It is a common problem that
People put you down for who or what you are—
But don’t let them.
Just laugh.
Just laugh at their unhappiness
For they are choosing to live in a way that causes pain
And you do not have to let them infect your life
With negativity.
If you decide to argue back instead of walk away,
You only perpetuate the cycle of hate.

If they say, “Because you’re a girl,”
Laugh and say—
“And how is that a bad thing?”
If they say “Because you’re a man,”
Laugh and say—
“Well I can be who I want because that doesn’t define me.”
If they say, “Because you’re race is x,”
Laugh and say—
“My skin does not make me who I am.”

If they mock you for your gender or your sexuality
Laugh and say—
“You don’t know true love, do you?”
If they dislike you because you are a tourist
Laugh and say—
“How else would you make your money if we did not spend so much here?”
If they mock you for religion or your lack there of
Laugh and say—
“I can believe what I want to
It does not affect you.”
If they hate you because you are fat
Laugh and say—
“At least I can enjoy my food,”
And if they hate you because you are thin (unless you are anorexic which is a bad thing)
Laugh and say—
“It’s not my fault I have good genes.”
If they mock you for your clothes
Laugh and say—
“I dress how I deem fit.”

The list goes on.

People like to mock—and hate—and berate,
But don’t let it blacken your soul—
Just laugh,
Because they are unhappy with themselves
And they want you to be
Unhappy too.
But if you can just laugh—
If you can throw that joy back in their face
You can let yourself stay happy
And maybe they will realize that they are unhappy
And fix it.
If not—
That is not a problem for you to fix.
That life is theirs,
And if they want to be unhappy
Because of someone else’s life—
The choice is theirs.
Let them.
But your life is yours.
You must choose to be happy
And fight back against all the darkness—
The negativity—
The anger and the pain—
And the offensive behavior.
Don’t let it get to you.
Just laugh
And be happy—
And be who you want to be—
The choice is yours.
Make the one that’s best for you
And be happy—
Just laugh.

Floating in the Ocean

Floating in the Ocean
1/6/2015

The seas are now changing and I must be strong,
I hold the wheel steady though so much could go wrong.
I’ve begun to feel dizzy, I can’t keep my head
But I have so few options, no fallback plans instead
Of my falling, my vessel’s drifting off course,
I grip only the wheel and hope it doesn’t get worse.
I can’t see the shore, there’s no land to be seen
As I drift steadily off course, I can’t contain the scream
Of horror and terror, the desperate pleas
To weigh down the anchor and get out of the seas.
I’m floating in the ocean, no land to be found,
I cannot see sunlight and my feet can’t touch ground.
The storm keeps on brewing that threw me off course
So I turn to the heavens, and pray for recourse
But nothing has changed and the quest only gets harder
But what choice do I have but to find some smarter
Plan to reset my path and I must go somewhere
So I pull out a map and push away despair.
I must draw a new course and make it my own,
Though I fight through rough waters, and the seeds I have sown
Of my drift in the ocean, but I can put it to right,
I’ll find a way through the darkness and turn on the light,
Through the clouds and the shadows, through wave after wave,
I’ll fight mighty monsters and make myself brave.
I’ll journey through unknown with no end in sight
But I know I can do it if I put up a fight!
I’ll find land again and find my own place
Though I may be treading water, gladly I’ll face
A future that’s uncertain, a black wall of rain,
I’ll push past the lost love and push past the pain
To a land of great beauty where I know I belong.
The journey may be rough, uncertain and long
If I find my own happiness it cannot be wrong,
So though it may be hard, I have to be strong,
Even if that means my float in the ocean I must prolong
Because one day I’ll reach shore where I can burst into a song
Of joyous occasion where my future is plain
Where all my uncertainty has been strangled and slain.

Words and Knowledge

Words and Knowledge
5/17/2013

Words scrawled in Black ink across a sheet of pristine paper.
But without Knowledge, the scrawls of Black ink
            Mean nothing.
Without Knowledge, all these words are, are
            Black scrawls.
Black scrawls scribbled haplessly across a page
            Of pristine, white, paper.
A mess of Black ink that without the correct Knowledge
            Is illegible.
Without Knowledge, words mean nothing.
But without words, how do we communicate our Knowledge?
Words are essential.
But are words Knowledge?
I do not know.

The Future Ahead

The Future Ahead
5/10/10

As I look ahead of me
At the path I must follow,
I quiver in my boots
And at times I just feel hollow.

The future looms ahead
And I have no idea what to do,
The sky looming forever onward,
So high and free and blue.

But free I am not,
I am trapped in this body,
As I clutch at random straws
Trying to avoid folly.

But then a cool breeze
Gently pushes its way forward,
I breathe a sigh of relief
As I start to move onward.

Finally a thought came to mind
Just as forth right as a creature,
There is one thing we must not be afraid of
And that thing is the future.

If you fear the future
Then you can never move on,
You will strive forever forward
As you try to get away from the dawn.

Soul

This is one of the first poems that I remember writing. For that reason I have left it untouched as well. It could be a bit better but I think it's good the way it is, especially considering I was a child when I wrote it.

Soul
Date Unknown

Presents and gifts, a friend doesn’t make,
Harsh words and tones a soul shall break.
Kindness and heart a friend does make,
Loving and care, a soul shall not break.
Happiness and love are the keys to a soul,
Not something nice, made out of wool.
Keep your dreams high and always flying,
Don’t give up, just keep on trying.
Have faith in what you believe,
It’s the things you know it to be.
Hope, love, friendship, courage, knowledge, light,
If you believe will help stop a fight.
Presents and gifts, a friend doesn’t make,
Harsh words and tones a soul shall break.

My Own Song of Myself

My Own Song of Myself
11/28/12

I sing a song, a song of myself
A song that few shall ever hear.
As I sing I sit and stare
And watch solemn specter’s dance near.
The specter’s seldom stop and watch and look
To see what round them stands.
Instead they swiftly stalk away
And in their pockets stuff their hands.
But in such moments they sadly miss
What around them still occurs,
They miss the things that matter most,
Parts of life’s undeniable quirks.
They miss the sky, so blue, so calm
They don’t see the coming storm.
A squirrel that scampers ‘cross their path
Is a thing they often scorn.
But in this they miss his fluffy tail,
The curiosity on his face,
They often miss his spectacular fur
And a squirrel’s own stylish grace.
When stopping to see the sun shine bright
And the flower’s colors that I hold so dear,
I often have time to contemplate
All of life’s irrational fears.
An oh so important test begins to seem
Not such a bad thing,
Grades so commonly become escalated,
Until all else in life becomes extinct.
Society ceases to matter when
All one worries about is their grades,
But one must come to understand
That there is no need to be afraid.
Of course grades are important
But they shouldn’t become ones whole life,
Everyone needs time to stop and see
And move past life’s little strife’s.
My favorite thing that calms me down
Is to sit outside and see
What transpires between people
And how they react to me.
I find it sad, when I watch
And find people no longer care
About what really matters,
What is already right there.
People miss the birds in flight,
The sun dancing on the window panes,
They miss the silent songs the wind sings,
They miss the flowers natural paint,
They miss the green grass underfoot,
And the bugs that scatter across the ground,
They miss the tiny things in life
That happen all around.

Every time I stop and stare
And look at what happens around me,
I hope that one day I may finally find
Another who may truly see.

My Journey

My Journey
4/12/10

My journey, my travels.
The places I go,
The people I meet,
The seeds I sow.

The gentle hand, the loving words,
I keep on moving,
Keep moving forward,
I keep walking.

My feet do not stop,
My journey moves on,
As I leave behind
The sunset and dawn.

As I move, following the road,
I leave people behind,
People I’ve come to care for,
Because I’ve new treasures to find.

It’s my blood, it longs for travel,
So I continue to move,
I continue to follow the road,
With nothing to prove.

How long, how far
This road shall take me
I know not,
All I can do is wait and see.

The end, my journey,
Still is far from my sight,
So I’ll keep moving,
Until I’m ready for flight.

My wings, I shall spread,
When I’m ready to sore,
But until then, my journey
Shall continue forever more.

Look, Listen, and Care

Look, Listen, and Care
5/4/10

Only those with eyes can see,
Only those with ears can hear,
And only those with tongues can speak.
If you do not look,
Then you will not see.
If you do not listen,
Then you will not hear.
And if you do not care,
Then you will not speak.
If we take a look around us,
Then we will see so many who do not
            See, hear, or speak.
Those who do not
            Look, listen, or care.
Are you one of them?
Do you see, hear, and speak?
Or are you on who does not look, listen, or care?
No one can make you do these things.
There is no reason to strive for these goals,
But if you do not look, listen, and care,
Then you will find no reason to see, hear, and speak.
Only with these can you truly learn and truly be free.
Free to be yourself and notice others.
The things we should do most
Are to look, listen, and care.
But there are so many
Who do not see, hear, or speak.
