Just Laugh

Just Laugh
2/26/2015

It is a common problem that
People put you down for who or what you are—
But don’t let them.
Just laugh.
Just laugh at their unhappiness
For they are choosing to live in a way that causes pain
And you do not have to let them infect your life
With negativity.
If you decide to argue back instead of walk away,
You only perpetuate the cycle of hate.

If they say, “Because you’re a girl,”
Laugh and say—
“And how is that a bad thing?”
If they say “Because you’re a man,”
Laugh and say—
“Well I can be who I want because that doesn’t define me.”
If they say, “Because you’re race is x,”
Laugh and say—
“My skin does not make me who I am.”

If they mock you for your gender or your sexuality
Laugh and say—
“You don’t know true love, do you?”
If they dislike you because you are a tourist
Laugh and say—
“How else would you make your money if we did not spend so much here?”
If they mock you for religion or your lack there of
Laugh and say—
“I can believe what I want to
It does not affect you.”
If they hate you because you are fat
Laugh and say—
“At least I can enjoy my food,”
And if they hate you because you are thin (unless you are anorexic which is a bad thing)
Laugh and say—
“It’s not my fault I have good genes.”
If they mock you for your clothes
Laugh and say—
“I dress how I deem fit.”

The list goes on.

People like to mock—and hate—and berate,
But don’t let it blacken your soul—
Just laugh,
Because they are unhappy with themselves
And they want you to be
Unhappy too.
But if you can just laugh—
If you can throw that joy back in their face
You can let yourself stay happy
And maybe they will realize that they are unhappy
And fix it.
If not—
That is not a problem for you to fix.
That life is theirs,
And if they want to be unhappy
Because of someone else’s life—
The choice is theirs.
Let them.
But your life is yours.
You must choose to be happy
And fight back against all the darkness—
The negativity—
The anger and the pain—
And the offensive behavior.
Don’t let it get to you.
Just laugh
And be happy—
And be who you want to be—
The choice is yours.
Make the one that’s best for you
And be happy—
Just laugh.

Places in a Pen

Places in a Pen
1/11/2015

I let my pen lead me to places unknown
To lands and countries where I won’t be alone.
Where I can speak to others and send them my words
Where those words can fly high like the wings of birds.

Words hold many a secrets, written in song
They show the whole world a way to be strong
Through showing us emotions, songs band us together,
To risk a cliché, they make us birds of a feather.

Or through words in poetry, written in verse
Through which many a century the reader may traverse
Back to olden days, where pens wrote great epics
And even children knew the value of poetics
Because glories were written to heroes and gods
And all across the land, words could trod.

But a pen in the right hand has powers so vast
That even people on high can’t find a way past
The places they lead to, the courses they lay
But those held on pedestals choose to put on a play
To avert the dull masses and disband the faith
They once held in writers whose words show the true face
Of the ones hiding secrets, and telling the lies
But who hold all the power, who seem so noble and wise.

My pen leads me to stories, of heroes and kings,
Or of beggars and thieves, or things that pull on the strings
Of what’s deep in your heart, which makes you feel joy or pain
And puts your mind in places that you cannot explain,
And they bring stories of people who live through hard times
Who are victims of war or abuse or of crimes
Or of people who live in a faraway place
Or were forced from their homes, from their own lands displaced,
Or stories of fantasy, where the hero’s a pawn,
Or mysteries, or adventures, must I go on?

Words bring us much but most aren’t aware
Of this wealth of intelligence and how much is there.
A large part of humanity won’t pick up a book
In which holds so much knowledge that they now overlook,
They won’t know any empathy or make a new friend
In the characters of a book, and they will not descend
Into wars so vile, and battles bloody and dark
And on glorious journeys they’ll never embark.

People don’t understand where my pen can take me
But the fault is their own and I am happy
To keep it myself, though I would like to share
I must leave it be as is only fair,
They must find for themselves the power pens hold
Because if not the feeling won’t be made of gold.

Writing is something that I do everyday
To get out my frustrations and push them away,
I use it to pull the stopper on my heart
So that turbulent emotions won’t tear me apart.

To force a love of writing and reading is bad
So I’ll leave them be until they take my hand
And choose to find joy in the words from a pen,
And then I hope that they can enjoy it again and again.

Floating in the Ocean

Floating in the Ocean
1/6/2015

The seas are now changing and I must be strong,
I hold the wheel steady though so much could go wrong.
I’ve begun to feel dizzy, I can’t keep my head
But I have so few options, no fallback plans instead
Of my falling, my vessel’s drifting off course,
I grip only the wheel and hope it doesn’t get worse.
I can’t see the shore, there’s no land to be seen
As I drift steadily off course, I can’t contain the scream
Of horror and terror, the desperate pleas
To weigh down the anchor and get out of the seas.
I’m floating in the ocean, no land to be found,
I cannot see sunlight and my feet can’t touch ground.
The storm keeps on brewing that threw me off course
So I turn to the heavens, and pray for recourse
But nothing has changed and the quest only gets harder
But what choice do I have but to find some smarter
Plan to reset my path and I must go somewhere
So I pull out a map and push away despair.
I must draw a new course and make it my own,
Though I fight through rough waters, and the seeds I have sown
Of my drift in the ocean, but I can put it to right,
I’ll find a way through the darkness and turn on the light,
Through the clouds and the shadows, through wave after wave,
I’ll fight mighty monsters and make myself brave.
I’ll journey through unknown with no end in sight
But I know I can do it if I put up a fight!
I’ll find land again and find my own place
Though I may be treading water, gladly I’ll face
A future that’s uncertain, a black wall of rain,
I’ll push past the lost love and push past the pain
To a land of great beauty where I know I belong.
The journey may be rough, uncertain and long
If I find my own happiness it cannot be wrong,
So though it may be hard, I have to be strong,
Even if that means my float in the ocean I must prolong
Because one day I’ll reach shore where I can burst into a song
Of joyous occasion where my future is plain
Where all my uncertainty has been strangled and slain.

Words and Knowledge

Words and Knowledge
5/17/2013

Words scrawled in Black ink across a sheet of pristine paper.
But without Knowledge, the scrawls of Black ink
            Mean nothing.
Without Knowledge, all these words are, are
            Black scrawls.
Black scrawls scribbled haplessly across a page
            Of pristine, white, paper.
A mess of Black ink that without the correct Knowledge
            Is illegible.
Without Knowledge, words mean nothing.
But without words, how do we communicate our Knowledge?
Words are essential.
But are words Knowledge?
I do not know.

What's In a Name?

What’s In a Name?
12/9/10

What does it mean
When you say something’s name?
Is that what it is?
Are they one and the same?

If that is true
Then is a flower a rose,
A plant, a vegetable,
And are all birds crows?

Does that mean if you call me a demon
That is what I am?
Or just because you say it,
Does that make me one of God’s lambs?

How do you know
What something truly was?
If you can’t see it
And you don’t know what it does?

A name doesn’t define you
And may not be true,
But people still believe it
And cannot get a clue.

A demon may not be a demon,
A song may not be sung,
An adult may be a child,
And a whip might be a tongue.

Just because we say it
Doesn’t make it so,
But words still are powerful,
And this is something I know.

Even if it isn’t true
Those words can still sting,
Sometimes you can’t ignore it
And keep living like a king.

So be careful what you say
Because a word’s a powerful thing.
But what’s in a name?
What harm can it bring?

What Matters

What Matters
1/27/2012

Writers only need to know
What matters at that time,
What matters to the story,
What matches with the rhyme.

Every other little thing does not
Really have a meaning.
All of it is worth only
What matters to my breathing.

Science does not matter if
It has nothing to do with
The subject matter of my life,
My story or my myth.

At the moment, it matters not
If it doesn’t match my reality.
Mathematics is a waste of time
As is the world of philosophy.

I know what I know,
I see what I see,
But everything else
Doesn’t matter to me.

True Love

True Love
7/13/09

Every single one of us
Will someday find the one we love.
But the details of the time and place
Will all be determined by the hands of fate.
The question I ask is simple and true,
And it’s a question I know is in your mind too.
Where is the one I truly love,
The one who’ll fit me like a glove?
How long must I quietly wait
To possess that most precious date
In time where I will find the one
Who’ll help me fly toward the soaring sun?
I’ll wait forever if I must
But at this time I want to thrust
The hands of the clock forward
So that I will move toward
The one I truly love,
Who’ll help me fly like a dove.

Stop

Stop
4/8/2014

Many a night I sit in silence—My brain
Ticking, tocking, ticking
And I stop—but move again,
Continuing forward,
Onward,
My thoughts colliding
In a multitudinous conglomeration
Of stress.
Worry, worry, working
My brain doesn’t stop ticking
And no matter what I try
It—just—won’t—stop—
There is no rest and like a pest
Ripping into my mind
It doesn’t stop.
So I let it run its course into the pitch black night
Until my eyes finally—sink—closed
And it—can all—stop—

Party Idolization

Party Idolization
10/1/2014

What has infected our society
That we choose to idolize those who are wrong?
Why is it that the people who always party
Are those about who we sing our songs?

“Yo this goes out to all you kids
That still have their cars at the club valet and it’s Tuesday,”
It the intonation of an idolized singer,
We praise this attitude and bow down
But what is it that makes this song a winner?

“Last Friday night…think we kissed but I forgot…”
An ode to those who party,
But since when is blacking out, “skinny dipping in the dark,”
“Yeah I think we broke the law…” a good thing?

Sure, being laid back, and having fun
Is a good quality to have
But when it gets to the point that you do wrong
That’s when your tone goes flat.

Freedom of movement, freedom of thought,
Is this what is idolized?
But if it’s blacking out and breaking laws
How will our society stay stabilized?

Breaking the law is not a joke,
It’s not something to brag about,
These are those who go to jail,
The ones who are ALWAYS figured out.

Those who drink too much liquor
And continue ‘til all goes black
Are those who go absolutely nowhere
Until others must pick up their slack.

When songs about resisting rehab
And going home with strangers are common,
I fear for our society
So please someone give me a good argument!

Why can’t we sing about scientists
Play piano to a musical genius,
We should sing odes to heroes,
Not about those who are blatantly rebellious.

In what manner is this rebellion good?
How does it benefit anyone?
All it gets you is poor grades in school,
A black cloak that dampers your fun.

But the problem with that idea
Is those partiers who get bad grades
Grumble and blame it on teachers,
On the ones who are getting paid.

It’s not the teachers fault when you’re sick
From drinking too much beer.
If you miss too much class you fail
So get your ass in gear.

But the world won’t get any brighter
If you happen to make it through school,
You also can’t skip out on work
Because you spent all night at a barstool.

In reality, the partiers are looked down on,
They are the ones who go nowhere,
And grumble about the unfairness of life
Just so you’re all aware.

Not that going to parties is bad,
It can be a good release of pressure,
A good break from the black cloud of life
And for the week ahead, a good refresher.

But when it becomes the core of your life
And all you do is party,
When Katy Perry* is who you idolize
You should probably be wary.

This is not what society should idolize,
We should look up to those who are smart.
Just because you have a smile like the sun
Doesn’t mean you’ll get very far.

Those who are smart are the ones who prosper,
They are the ones who climb the ranks,
The smart ones go somewhere in life
Though as “nerds” they are bullied and pranked.

Though it may be cliché to say so,
The smart ones will be your boss, it’s true,
They can create their own roads in life
Unlike partiers who may misconstrue
Who the real people are to be idolized,
The ones with real virtues,
The ones who do good things with life,
The ones the partiers may rue.

If we want to fix society
Ideas like this must be tested,
Things that really matter in life
Are the things in which we should be interested.

So be wary who and what you idolize,
For life’s not just a game.
Idolize those that make good advancements
And that’s when society will be saved.

*I do not hold anything against Katy Perry, she's just the one that I've heard the most songs on the radio about partying.

Assumptions

Assumptions
5/19/2012

Don’t ever—Assume—anything
Because most likely you are wrong.
There are so many presumptions made
Which should not stay too long.

People assume—Too often—
At things they cannot know,
Often things in people’s lives
Are things they may not show.

The kid who often misses school
May actually be sick.
You—CANNOT—just assume
That they like to ditch.

That quiet—silent—girl in the corner,
Is most likely very shy.
People often think she’s arrogant
But I always wonder why.

There’s a boy whose sleeves are long,
His wrists are jagged and cut,
What’s in his life you cannot know
Have you even taken the time to ask?

There is no way for us to know
So Assumptions—are often made.
So if you even care at all
Extend a hand in aid.

Assumptions are a poison,
It travels through the veins
Of society—where we like to think
That we hold onto the reigns.

But that is not true
So it’s all up to you
To find out what’s right
And use all of your might
To change.

Not We, But Me

Not We, But Me
3/9/11

We are not one, but two.
Two passages created unequally.
The same word, the same look,
But defined differently.
Two words with two meanings.

She is a passage,
A passage from a tome,
Pristine form
Scrawled on the page.
Letters,
Neatly aligned.
She is a passage
In a story,
But only that,
A small segment.
A passage of what is,
Of what was.
The rest?
Hidden-
Another passage
Never to be found,
Not even by me,
Her opposite.

I am a passage to someplace else,
A place that is yet to be revealed.
The peeled walls and plastic flowers of my passage,
Pass by others, but rarely intersect with them,
Leaving a few scattered doors that vary in form.
They connect to my passage, locking two together.
But my world is my own.
And though it is not hidden, my passage is for only me.
There is no one else who treads through it.

To say we are the same
Is an illusion.
It is not reality.
If I were a passage in a book
My words would differ.
If she were a passageway,
With more doors she’d be connected.

There have been moments,
Brief periods,
When we were considered
One.
Not just the same in person
But in identity.
When only one was allowed,
We were counted as one
Although we are not.
Others aren’t considered one
So why are we?

Together
We may be we,
But I am still me
And she is still she.

We are not one, but two.

My Other Side

My Other Side
5/3/09

My heart was split
From the moment of birth,
We were two halves,
But what were we worth?
To those around us
We were known as “the twins,”
We were put together as one,
Like a set of matching pins.
It hurt me inside
To not be thought of as whole,
But she was most of what I had,
When we were together I felt full.
We may have been different
And at times we fight,
But whenever I need it
She helped me through the night.
She has always been with me,
Through thick and thin,
She has been my other side,
Whatever my sin.

Lost Meaning

Lost Meaning
4/12/10

Have you ever deigned to realize
When people say I’m sorry,
For the most part you ignore it
No matter what their worry.

What is the reason for this?
Every word loses its meaning
When it’s so often repeated
Causing others to ignore its feeling.

When you often apologize
For something not your fault,
It causes others to ignore it
For it’s a word used as a default.

This isn’t just true with I’m sorry
But with other phrases as well,
If you constantly hear I love you,
When they mean it, you can’t truly tell.

If you repeat a word
Only about a dozen times,
It quickly loses its meaning,
Go ahead and give it a try.

Quiet, quiet, quiet, quiet
Quiet, quiet, quiet, quiet,
Quiet, quiet, quiet, quiet,
Now doesn’t it look funny?

I never truly realized this
Until it was pointed out,
These words were quietly spoken
Because there was no need to shout.

When I was told her father died,
My fist response was, “I’m sorry.”
She cocked her head and asked me why,
So I responded, “I guess because I’m worried.”

“I feel  really sad
Because your father died.”
She said, “It’s not your fault,
There’s no reason to apologize.”

It was then that I realized,
I simply brush it away,
When people constantly apologize,
And I continue on my way.

 I also quickly realized
That I often do the same,
I constantly apologize
Even though I’m not to blame.

So the next time someone tells you
That something bad has happened,
Your reaction should not be to apologize,
Because there isn’t really a reason.

I beg you to find another way
To show you feel sympathy,
Or all your words, as well as others
Could eventually lose their meaning.
